A 500-Crore Wedding in the Days of No Cash : Things to Do if You don’t want to put Daddy in Jail

If you live in India, you’ve had to deal with the ongoing cash crunch in some way or the other since the night of November 8. Most of you have probably waited in queues at ATMs and banks for hours, only to be able to access a limited amount of your own money. Guess who didn’t have this problem, and probably never will? The politicians of India, the ones who make these rules, change them every day, and watch as the country plunges into chaos. Yes, it would be unfair to blame all of them. Not all of them are incompetent for the positions they hold, or dirty. But it gets difficult to think well of politicians when one of their own decides to shamelessly make an obnoxious display of his most certainly ill-gotten wealth, and many others exchange pleasantries at this disgrace.

In the past week, Gali Janardhana Reddy, accused of massive tax evasion and illegal mining in the infamous Bellary mining scam, hosted his daughter’s wedding in Karnataka. The affair cost an unimaginable ₹500 crore, some say the cost could be much more, and was held at a time when “commoners” were struggling for basics like onions and milk. Not such a great idea if you plan on asking those “commoners” to vote for you anytime soon.
So, for anyone else planning to spend suspicious wealth on upcoming nuptials, here are a few lessons you can learn from the big, fat Reddy wedding.
Don’t let daddy dearest use you as a display of his money.

The terrible fashion choices aside, your wedding really shouldn’t be about displaying wealth, however clean or dirty it may be. Maybe if Janardhana Reddy’s daughter hadn’t been wearing diamonds till her waist and beyond, the income tax department would not have raided his coffers.
Weddings don’t need a venue the size of a small town.

And 50,000 guests, 3,000 bouncers, and several structures like the sets of a Bollywood movie. The mining baron managed to recreate the Vijaynagar temples of Hampi, complete with motorised elephants. The wedding venue was supposed to look like Bellary, the Reddys’ hometown and also where the bride was raised. So everything, from the markets to the school where the bride studied, was recreated at the venue. A simpler solution, in our opinion, was to get married in Bellary. But what do we know?
If daddy has already spent time in jail for (surprise, surprise) tax evasion, talk some sense into him.

Start with the wedding card and insist on not spending ₹5 crore on just telling people that you’re getting married. He may have made payments just before demonetisation was announced, which is not suspicious at all, don’t let your father plan a wedding which will make him the centre of attention again and force the income tax department to take action. Because you know that they’ll definitely find something in the books of a man who just spent close to a tiny nation’s GDP on a party.

Janardhana Reddy was not the one who decided to ban ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes overnight. He also wasn’t the one who has made people stand in lines and work endlessly for days, to the point of killing them. But he’s a politician, supposedly a people’s representative, and a man who has been implicated in one of the biggest scams this country has ever seen. He probably did expect to get away with this blinding, glittery slap on our tax-paying faces. And because he, like us, lives in a country where government after government fails to tackle black money and increases the tax burden on the same people who have always reeled under it, he will probably get away with a lot more.

Doctors believe that the boy could have a medical condition called “precocious puberty” which made him attain puberty at an earlier age which is why he is being believed to be the youngest father in India.

The girl had alleged that she had been raped by the boy following which a case has been registered against him, they said. However, when questioned, the boy blamed the girl for the relationship and hence a case has been registered against the young mother.
