Modern medicine is capable of miraculous things. As technology improves, we move closer and closer to a time when body parts can be printed via 3D means, where replacement organs can be grown in the lab, and many horrible diseases can be cured via genetic engineering and stem cell research.
In Medicine, The Future Is NOW
Science Is Making Some Remarkable Breakthroughs
But there are other alternative treatments that are catching fire, and many seem to come right out of a science fiction film. For example, a man in China named “Mr. Ji” (for privacy reasons) was recently in a car accident and lost his ear. It was a horrible injury and one that caused the victim considerable harm.W
When A Man Lost His Ear, Doctors Just Rebuilt It
Mr. Ji was inconsolable. He wanted his normal life back. He didn’t want to be inconvenienced. So doctors took it upon themselves to do the near impossible. Using new techniques, they managed to do something many thought impossible before. Using the skin from his arm and some cartilage from his rib, they crafted a new ear. No, seriously.
On His Arm
It’s all a bit surreal. Doctors first placed a dilator under the man’s skin, expanding it to create excess dermis. Then they “made” a new ear out of the cartilage and then implanted it. Given time, the new facial feature will grow and heal. Then they will remove it and transplant it to the side of Mr. Ji’s head. Remarkable, right? That’s modern medicine for you – always making with the miracles.
